Des études géologiques laissent supposer que le Götzenberg pourrait même avoir été le centre d’éruption du basalte du Stöffel. La carte géologique de la région montre la répartition du basalte autour du Stöffel. Le sommet constitue le point culminant des environs immédiats et est aujourd’hui protégé en tant que monument naturel.&lt;br&gt;<br /> &lt;br&gt;<br /> Des découvertes archéologiques du XXᵉ siècle suggèrent qu’une enceinte circulaire préhistorique – possiblement un refuge celte de la fin de l’âge du Fer – se trouvait jadis au sommet. Dans les environs, plusieurs tumuli préhistoriques témoignent également d’une utilisation humaine ancienne dans la région. Aucune étude scientifique moderne n’a toutefois encore été menée.&lt;br&gt;<br /> &lt;br&gt;<br /> Les pentes du Götzenberg sont aujourd’hui couvertes d’une forêt feuillue riche en espèces. Hêtres et chênes prospèrent sur les sols fertiles issus de l’altération du basalte. Les éboulis constitués de blocs de basalte offrent un habitat rare à de nombreuses espèces animales et végétales protégées.
